This program provides an opportunity to develop the ability to address global challenges from interdisciplinary perspectives through study and international exchange in Sub-Saharan Africa. Guided by the One Health approach—recognizing the interconnectedness of people, animals, the environment, and society—students from diverse backgrounds collaborate and learn through hands-on, field-based experiences. It is an open and inclusive program for those who wish to broaden their expertise, engage with different cultures and perspectives, and build a global outlook.

Learn Globally with One Health

One Healthは、21世紀に入り世界的に広がっている新しい学びの考え方です。人間の活動による環境の変化や、それに伴う感染症の拡大、環境汚染などの問題は、国や分野を越えて取り組む必要がある地球規模の課題です。One Healthでは、「健康」を人間だけでなく、動物や環境、さらに社会や経済、文化なども含めて総合的に捉え、よりよい未来の実現を目指します。

このような課題に取り組むためには、医学や環境科学、獣医学だけでなく、工学、農学、情報科学、社会科学、人文学など、さまざまな分野の知識を組み合わせることが重要です。

北海道大学では、「大学の世界展開力強化事業」の一環として、長年交流のあるザンビア大学に加え、ナミビア大学、ボツワナ農業天然資源大学（BUAN）と連携し、One Healthに基づいた大学院生向けの国際教育プログラムを実施しています。アフリカでは、日本とは異なる環境の中で、地球規模の課題に向き合いながら、現場で学び、実践的な知識と経験を身につけることができます。また、パートナー大学の学生も日本に来て研究室に参加し、最先端のOne Health研究に触れることで、分野を越えた視点と実践力を養います。

One Health is an emerging way of learning that has gained global attention in the 21st century. Challenges such as environmental changes caused by human activities, the spread of infectious diseases, and pollution are global issues that require collaboration across countries and disciplines. One Health approaches “health” not only in terms of humans, but also animals, the environment, and even social, economic, and cultural factors, aiming to create a better and more sustainable future.

To address these challenges, it is important to integrate knowledge from a wide range of fields—not only medicine, environmental science, and veterinary medicine, but also engineering, agriculture, data science, social sciences, and the humanities.

At Hokkaido University, as part of the Inter-University Exchange Project, we work with the University of Zambia, the University of Namibia, and the Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (BUAN) to offer an international graduate-level program based on the One Health approach. In Africa, you will learn in real-world settings that differ from Japan, gaining hands-on experience and practical skills to tackle global challenges. Students from partner universities also come to Japan, join research labs, and engage in cutting-edge One Health research, developing interdisciplinary perspectives and practical competencies.
